History & Origin

The Dachshund’s story goes back over 600 years to Germany, where they were bred as fearless hunters. Their very name means “badger dog” in German — a nod to their original purpose: digging into burrows and flushing out badgers, rabbits, and other game. Their long bodies, strong paws, and courageous nature made them perfectly suited for this work. As the breed developed, hunters refined them into two sizes:

• Standard Dachshunds for tracking larger game like badgers and wild boar.

• Miniature Dachshunds for smaller prey like rabbits and hares.

Over time, their intelligence, determination, and charming looks made them popular far beyond the hunting fields. Health & Exercise

Dachshunds are generally a healthy breed, living 12–16 years with proper care. Because of their unique body shape, it’s important to keep them at a healthy weight and protect their backs from injury. Avoid letting them jump off furniture or run up and down stairs.

Despite their small size, Dachshunds need regular daily exercise — two moderate walks a day are ideal. Exercise helps them stay fit, build strong muscles to support their long backs, and release their endless energy. They are happiest as indoor dogs, close to their families, rather than being left outside alone.

Training & Nutrition

Smart, affectionate, and full of character, Dachshunds thrive with positive, reward-based training. While they can be stubborn, patience and consistency go a long way. Their strong prey drive and sharp sense of smell mean they’re easily distracted, so keeping training fun and engaging is key.
